What techniques do video games use to evoke emotion?

The best video games– my opinion– are the ones that break the player’s protective shell. Usually, we are protected from the reality of the game. This is usually a necessary thing for the premise of the game; your typical MW2 player isn’t a trained soldier and thus needs the comfort of “this is fantasy” to be able to play the part of one.

However, many games nowadays try to grab the player by the gut. Alyx Vance comes to mind. How do you think this is done? What does it take in order to make us feel emotion for some pixels on our screens?

Answer
Good story lines, characters you can relate to, and good graphics.

Final Fantasy 7 for example. The death of a character impacted many who like that series. So much that a cheat was created to bring her back, although it doesn’t work well.

I’ve heard a rumor that the creators of the Silent Hill games are going to use psychology for their next game. It will involve the player taking a test. The test will reveal player’s fears and the game will act accordingly.

You are the only thinker in your universe
I had a weight loss client recently explain how upset she was at her husband for allowing an eight-year-old girl to accompany their young daughter into their home one afternoon. The husband was there along with another father from the neighborhood and, according to this woman, the little girl “Had no business in my house.”
She was upset because the girls’ mom didn’t know where she was. As she was recounting the story she was getting more emotional and upset. Here is an abbreviated transcript of the conversation: Me: “What are you upset with and why? Client: “My husband. He was in the house with another man from the neighborhood. Our daughter walked in with an eight-year old girl that we didn’t know. Her mother didn’t even know where she was. She had no business in my house!” Me: “What about her being in your house upsets you?”
Client: (getting agitated) “My husband should not have let her in the house. In this day and age, she could have said anything. Her mother didn’t even know she was there.
She had no business being in my house! She could say anything and we could lose everything!” Me: “Is she a friend of your daughters or did she just walk in off the street?” Client: “No, she’s a friend.” Me: “Is your daughter allowed to bring friends in the house?” Client: “Not if their mother doesn’t know where she is!” Me: “Is that your daughters’ fault?” Client: “No.” Me: “Is it the girls’ fault?” Client: “She should tell her mother where she is, but she’s only eight. I think the mother should know where her daughter is.”
Me: “Couldn’t your husband have called the girl’s mother to tell her she was over at the house?” Client: “I didn’t think of that. Yeah, that would have been good.” Me: “Do you trust your husband not to molest little girls?” Client: “Of course, but her mother didn’t know where she was. She could have said anything.” Me: “Couldn’t the little girl say anything regardless of whether or not her mother knew where she was?” Client: “I never thought of that.” Me: “In reality, the fact the mother didn’t know where she was at would probably work in your favor if something ever was said, because she could be painted as somewhat negligent.” Client: “You’re right. I never thought of that either.” Me: “Can you see how you created wasted stress for yourself and your husband over something that didn’t exist? Certainly, you want the girl to be safe and you know she was safe with your husband. Any little girl can say anything at anytime. Your husband was in the house with another man and your daughter. Was there really a threat to be concerned about?” Client: “When you put it that way, I guess not…”
This is a classic FEAR scenario.
She created stress by responding to a False Expectation that the girl might accuse her husband of molesting her. She was so upset that it was as if it was Appearing Real. Of all the possible scenarios, she chose to frame the incident in the most negative. By walking her through the scenario in a more realistic manner, I was able to help her to reframe the situation with a more honest perspective. Yes, we’d like for the girl’s mom to know where she is, but that didn’t really increase the risk factor for her husband in that scenario.
When she said, “When you put it that way…” she was recognizing how I had reframed it. She framed the situation as a potential to lose everything. I “put it” in a more realistic frame with little or no risk or stress attached to it. I used this as an example for her about how she is creating massive amounts of stress for herself and her family with negative thought patterns. Some people have patterns that seek out the most negative possible outcome and focus on that. They delude themselves into thinking that they are being responsible when they worry and project that negative energy on anyone who’ll listen. In reality, people who frame the world that way are exhausting to be around and, in time, often slip into depression. The client in the above example is on medication for depression. She framed the world in such a negative way that it came as no surprise that she was a comfort eater. In subsequent sessions, she said she was starting to “catch herself” framing situations in the negative.
She was learning to explore other ways to look at the possibilities rather than embracing the first negative pattern that emerged. This client had a hard time at first, seeing the situation, as anything but “That girl had no business in my house.” It wasn’t until I walked her through the scenario as described above that she could see other, healthier more positive possibilities. Then she was able to intellectually “reframe” the situation into more realistic perspective. With practice, she can begin to reweave her patterns to reframe situations into more positive, hopeful scenarios.

How To Turn Article Into Video

Left to right, Eric E. Schmidt, Sergey Brin an...

The internet video trend is rising sharply and will continue to increase for years to come. If you do not make the video transition, you can expect to get left in the dust. The easiest way to get started in the lucrative world of internet video marketing is by learning how to turn article into video.

You do not have to feel comfortable in front of a camera, because you will not be showing yourself to the world with this video technique. In fact, you do not even need to have a web camera. And, if you are using articles you have already written, you can get started without even coming up with new content. How sweet is that?

Video sites are like article directories because they have videos on every subject you can imagine. It is an entire new market for you to promote your products or website. You’ll get more organic search engine traffic because Google loves videos.

You will find that you get more people viewing your videos than you have people reading your articles. And your videos will convey your message better, too. Studies have shown that people remember a lot more when they can see and hear the information at the same time, instead of just reading or just hearing.

All that is required, besides your computer, is a microphone and some inexpensive software. You will read your article and store it in an mp3 file. As you read, try to make it sound like you are just talking to a friend, rather than reading. Try it a few times until you get good at it.

Then you will set up the visual images, which can be entirely text that you type, but you can easily add pictures, if you want. Have a title page, a few subheadings, and some bullet points for the subheadings. Finally, type the URL want people to go to.

When you mix the sound and visuals into a file, you will upload it to video sites. That is all it takes to know how to turn article into video.

What are alternative 3 finger power chord techniques?

Specifically, I’d like to know a more effective way to play 3 finger chords, maybe a technique that involves a barre? And where I could find some good instructional videos teaching the technique please, so I can have smoother, faster transitions. ^^

Answer
(quoting the other answerer)

G- 5 7 4 4 5 4 7 9
D- 7 5 7 5 7 4 4 10
A- 8 5 5 7 7 5 5 10
These are all common three finger chords, but most of them aren’t “power” chords… power chords are by definition chords with only the root and fifth (and octave, if you want to be technically correct).

The second figure, for instance, is a A5/D – a power chord with the fifth in the lowest position. It is a power chord. The first figure, on the other hand, isn’t – it is an F maj triad.

I don’t know of any “barre” techniques specifically, but understanding the CAGED system and how the triads are derived from the full chord form would be helpful, as that should help you out with position, at the very least.

For instance – the first triad is Fmaj, and can be thought of as the “C” chord at the 5th position, ie

5 8 6 5 6 5

When I look at it this way, I can then immediately see that the second triad is also in the 5th position – that will make for a smooth transition, as you don’t have to move your hand up or down the neck, it stays right there at the fifth fret (fifth position).

The last triad is a C, but its a few positions up the neck – I wouldn’t necessarily want to play it if I’d have to transition right back down the neck somewhere, right? Unnecessary movement = less efficient transitions. So I would find a form of the C chord that fit in at the 5th position. Turns out that the closest form of it is actually the next string down… so a transition would go from

E-
B-
G- 5 9
D- 7 10
A- 8 10
E-

to

E-
B-
G- 5
D- 7 5
A- 8 7
E- .. 8

Alternatively, if you want to keep the same note structure (inversion) than you might play
E-
B- …5
G- 5 5
D- 7 5
A- 8
E-

It won’t have quite the same sound, of course, but it will be in the same position, and therefore will be a little more efficient *if* you are staying within the same position.

Google “CAGED system” for more information about that.

Good luck!

Saul
